The automotive industry is in the middle of the most significant materials transformation since the shift from wood to steel in the 1920s. Fiber reinforced polymers — both glass fiber (GFRP) and carbon fiber (CFRP) — are becoming essential as manufacturers race to reduce weight for electric vehicles and meet stricter emissions regulations.
For internal combustion vehicles, the relationship between weight and efficiency is significant but manageable. For electric vehicles, weight directly impacts range — a heavier EV requires a larger, more expensive battery pack to achieve the same range as a lighter vehicle.
Reducing body weight by 100kg can extend EV range by 5–10%, depending on driving conditions. This makes lightweight materials not just a performance benefit but an economic one.
Industry data: Every 10% reduction in vehicle weight can improve EV range by approximately 6–8%. A 50kg weight reduction through FRP components can save $200–500 in battery costs per vehicle at current cell prices.
Battery Enclosures: The most rapidly adopted FRP application in EVs. CFRP or GFRP battery trays replace aluminum housings, providing equal or better crash protection at lower weight. Thermal management can be integrated into the layup.
Structural Components: CFRP crossmembers, floor panels, and subframes are appearing in premium EVs and racing applications.
Body Panels & Closures: FRP body panels offer corrosion resistance, design flexibility, and easier repairability compared to aluminum stampings.
Interior Components: FRP/CFRP seat structures, dashboards, and trim reduce weight while offering premium aesthetics.
High-pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM) and compression molding of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) are the dominant processes for automotive FRP, capable of producing components in 2–5 minutes per part at volumes exceeding 100,000 units annually.
At Yasheng FRP, we're investing in high-volume SMC and compression molding capabilities to serve the growing automotive market — from prototype runs of a few dozen parts to full-scale production of hundreds of thousands.
We support automotive OEMs and tier suppliers with prototyping and production.
